Learning about Conservation

Friday March 21, 2017:

We spent a wonderful morning with the Harvard group in the library. We learned from Jeff and Victoria, the conservator for the collection, about the work of preserving the collection’s fragile treasures. Victoria spoke with us about being a conservator. She detailed her process and the care and deliberation that goes into maintaining the collection with an eye towards its use. The goal is to be minimally invasive and reversible, using delicate paper and fine powders to repair damages. Victoria was a wonderful speaker, who not only informed us about the evolution of conservation’s best practices, but engaged us in questioning the ethics and efficacy of conservation work. The morning was very fun and very informative.
