Though I knew that the act of writing wasn’t as easy in Wordsworth’s time as it now, that fact definitely became even clearer as we attempted to write with the quills, learned the recipe for ink, and made our own paper. We talked about the implications this had on William’s writing. Was his writing more deliberate since he couldn’t simply erase mistakes? Was the inconvenience of writing the reason Wordsworth preferred to compose poems in his mind rather than on paper? Getting the opportunity to experience physically what writing was like back then enhanced so much my experience of looking through the manuscripts. I was made aware of the slight differences in ink color on single pages due to the fact that no two ink batches can have exactly the same ratio of ingredients. The manuscripts had new temporality for me.
